Controversy Over CNDH Re-election in Mexico

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has stated that her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, did not impose Rosario Piedra Ibarra as the head of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) against her will. Sheinbaum denounced a campaign by national columnists who claimed that the reelection of Piedra Ibarra in the CNDH was an order from López Obrador, while she supported Nashieli Ramírez, head of the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City.

Sheinbaum questioned analysts who pointed out that the appointment of Piedra Ibarra was an imposition by the former president, arguing that they are not creative because everyone says the same thing. She referred to criticisms about the reelection of Piedra Ibarra, who was the lowest rated of the candidates and presented a false letter of recommendation, as well as the lack of support from civil associations, including Eureka, founded by her mother.

Despite doubts and questions from senators of Morena, López Obrador's party, regarding the reelection of Piedra Ibarra, the majority coordinator, Adán Augusto López, assured that her appointment was guaranteed. The opposition and civil organizations have criticized the reelection, highlighting the human rights crisis in Mexico with thousands of missing persons and victims of violence, stating that the current president of the CNDH has ignored complaints against abuses by the Armed Forces.

In her words, Sheinbaum expressed: "It's incredible, really incredible, look at all the news: AMLO decided who is the president of the commission". She asserted that the senators are adults and have the capacity to decide, emphasizing respect for Rosario Piedra Ibarra.
